Chiropractic Adjustments in Newport Beach
The adjustment is the heart of chiropractic — and the most misunderstood thing I do. It isn't about "cracking your back." A chiropractic adjustment is a precise, controlled movement applied to a joint that has stopped moving well, restoring motion the body has been compensating around, often for years.
I'm Dr. Julie Stefanski, and at Wholistic Abode in Newport Beach, every adjustment is full-spine, tailored, and part of a complete hands-on session — never a five-minute in-and-out.
What an adjustment actually does
When a spinal joint gets restricted — from injury, posture, stress, or habit — the body doesn't stop moving; it borrows motion from somewhere else. That's how one stuck segment becomes neck pain, back pain, headaches, or that constant tightness that stretching never fixes. The adjustment restores motion at the exact segment that's lost it, which calms the surrounding muscle guarding, improves nerve function, and lets the body stop compensating.
About the pop
That sound — the one everyone asks about — is called a cavitation: a pressure change inside the joint releasing gas, like opening a bottle. It's not bones grinding or anything snapping into place. Sometimes there's a pop, sometimes there isn't, and the adjustment works either way. If you're nervous about being adjusted, tell me — there are gentler, low-force techniques, and we go at your body's pace.
Never just the adjustment
Adjusting a joint without treating the tissue around it is half a job. Every session here pairs full-spine adjustment with the hands-on work your body needs that day — myofascial release, cupping, instrument-assisted soft tissue work (FAKTR), percussion, and trigger point therapy — plus functional movement analysis and exercise prescription, including one-on-one reformer Pilates, so the change holds between visits.
