Why Upper Back and Rib Pain Isn’t Just a Chiropractic Problem
Most people assume back pain lives in the spine and nowhere else. Then they end up with a dull ache wrapping around their ribs, or a sharp catch every time they take a deep breath, and the spine explanation stops making sense. That’s because it isn’t the whole story.
I’m Dr. Julie Stefanski, and rib and mid-back pain is one of the more misunderstood complaints that walks through my door.
The Part of Your Spine Everyone Forgets
Your rib cage isn’t just protecting your organs, it’s attached to your spine at every single level of your mid-back, through small joints most people have never heard of. When those joints get stiff or irritated, from a long day hunched at a desk, a hard bike ride, a car accident, or just sleeping wrong, the pain can radiate around the ribs, into the chest, even under the shoulder blade. It’s frequently mistaken for something scarier than it is.
Why It’s Not Purely a Spine Issue
Breathing mechanics, posture, and the muscles between your ribs are all part of the picture. Someone who spends all day slouched forward gradually loses mobility through that whole region, and the body compensates in ways that create pain somewhere else entirely. Treating just the spine and ignoring the ribs, the breathing pattern, and the surrounding soft tissue is why some rib pain never fully resolves.
What Actually Helps
Care here combines spinal and rib joint mobilization with the soft tissue work the area needs, myofascial release, cupping, or instrument-assisted therapy, depending on what’s found on exam, plus movement and breathing guidance so the mobility actually holds. This is exactly the kind of case where a thorough first visit matters: a real exam finds where the restriction actually lives instead of guessing.
When to Take It Seriously
Sudden, severe chest pain, pain with shortness of breath, or pain after significant trauma should always be checked by a physician first, ribs and hearts share a neighborhood, and it’s worth ruling out anything cardiac or a fracture. Once that’s cleared, this is exactly the kind of pain hands-on care handles well.
Getting Started
Your first visit is a full 60 minutes, exam and treatment together. We work with most PPO plans, and same-day appointments are often available when you book online.
