What a Hands-On Chiropractic Visit for Sciatica Actually Looks Like
Sciatica has a flair for the dramatic. One wrong move reaching for a coffee mug and suddenly thereβs a lightning bolt running from your glute to your ankle, and youβre googling βsciatica treatment Newport Beachβ from the floor. Fair. Letβs skip the mystery and tell you exactly what happens when you bring it to my table.
Iβm Dr. Julie Stefanski, a chiropractor on the Newport Peninsula, and sciatica is one of my most frequent flyers, showing up in desk workers from Costa Mesa, surfers from Huntington Beach, and cyclists from all over Orange County who thought their hips were invincible.
What Is Sciatica, Actually?
Hereβs the plot twist: sciatica isnβt even a diagnosis, itβs a symptom. Your sciatic nerve runs from your lower spine, through your hip, all the way down each leg, and something along that route is annoyed. Could be a disc, could be the joints in your lower back, could be a deep hip muscle squeezing the nerve like a tight doorway. Thatβs why generic treatment so often flops, and why step one is figuring out which kind of troublemaker yours is.
How Long Is the First Visit and What Happens?
No mystery waiting period here. Your first visit is a full 60 minutes, exam and treatment together, same day. We start with an actual conversation: when this started, what makes it worse, what youβve already thrown at it. Then a thorough exam that tests your spine, hips, and the nerve itself, so weβre treating the real source instead of guessing. Then we get to work, that same appointment.
What Does Hands-On Treatment for Sciatica Include?
Never a five-minute crack-and-go, and never a copy-paste routine. A sciatica visit typically combines a full-spine chiropractic adjustment with whatever soft tissue work your case is asking for: myofascial release for the deep hip rotators and low back, cupping or instrument-assisted work wherever tissue is guarding for dear life, and movement or exercise prescription so the relief actually sticks around after you leave the parking lot.
How Many Visits Does Sciatica Take?
The honest, slightly annoying answer: it depends on the troublemaker. Muscular sciatica often eases up within a handful of visits. Disc-related cases take longer and need you to actually do the homework, not just nod along. Either way, youβll leave your first visit knowing exactly what I found, what the plan is, what it costs, and how weβll know itβs working. If your case needs imaging or a different specialist, Iβll say so.
When Should You Skip Me Entirely?
Numbness in the groin or saddle area, loss of bladder or bowel control, or a leg rapidly losing strength: those are emergencies, and the move is urgent care or the ER, not my waiting room. Genuinely rare. For everything else, earlier care usually means a faster exit from lightning-bolt territory.
Does Insurance Cover Sciatica Treatment?
We work with most PPO plans. Text us at (949) 447-7545 before your first visit and weβll check your benefits for free. Every visit type and price is listed openly on our booking page, and same-day appointments are often available when you book online.
